Heritage Management Field Program 2017
Participants will visit heritage sites across Cambodia working with local communities, national authorities, government officials, and heritage professionals to understand the complexities of successfully managing heritage sites in a developing economy. In consultation with local communities and government officials students will design a heritage management plan for a designated heritage site.
Students will be from varied international and regional backgrounds and will share and engage in the cross-cultural exchange of ideas and values around heritage. The HMFP will provide a transformative and rigorous academic experience that will encourage students to think critically about the role of heritage today.
Cambodia
The ancient Khmer Empire of Angkor was at its height 900 years ago and stretched over the diverse landscape of what is now modern day Cambodia and Thailand. The extraordinary and unique Hindu temples of Angkor, the Empire’s spiritual and governing center, evoke the rich culture of Khmer society from across the centuries.
The program will be based in the busy town of Siem Reap, located just 6 kilometers from the entry to the World Heritage Site of Angkor. Siem Reap is rich in colonial and traditional architecture, with plenty of tourist amenities.

In the field of cultural heritage there are very few opportunities to gain international, practical, field based experience specifically in heritage management. The HMFP will provide the opportunity to gain practical field experience in the specific discipline of heritage management. Additionally, participants will gain exposure to leading international academic perspectives on issues related to cultural heritage, heritage management, and cultural property in a country rich with cultural resources.
Participants will work closely with Cambodian communities, government officials, and professionals to learn about Cambodia’s cultural heritage and the myriad challenges of managing and protecting the country’s rich and diverse heritage. Further, HMFP students will have the opportunity to work on existing projects contributing community development and protection of Cambodia’s heritage.
Program Details
Course Dates: Saturday May 27, 2017 – Saturday July 8, 2017
The HMFP consists of 6 weeks of intensive course work and lectures. Each week students will explore different themes in cultural heritage:
- Heritage & Society
- Working with Communities
- Planning for Heritage & Tourism I
- Planning for Heritage & Tourism II
- Heritage for Sustainable Development
- Creating a Master Plan – planning at heritage sites
The 6th and final week students will present final group projects at a symposium supported by the Ministry of Culture and Fine Arts, the Ministry of Tourism, and the APSARA Authority.
Each module will be complimented by:
- Site visits
- Field research
- Guest lectures
- Group discussions
- Written assignments
Faculty will serve as instructors and provide guided application of theory in the field. Students will have a singular opportunity to learn from the best, meet with government officials, and work directly with leaders of local heritage sites. Students come from a diverse range of backgrounds countries, and cultures. The program welcomes university students –graduate students, senior undergraduates, professionals, and heritage practitioners.
Students will be required to participate in group discussions during lectures and seminars. Additionally, they will be required to complete at least one written assignment per course topic (5). Students will also be required to submit a final project at the end of the program.
For the final project, students will be divided into groups (project teams) and work together to produce a final project to be presented at the end of the program at a closing symposium. These final group projects will be based on an existing project site or purposed research topic addressing an authentic current need in Cambodia.
Accommodation
Students, staff, and faculty will be staying at an all-inclusive private facility in Siem Reap, Cambodia. The facility includes a large, two-story dormitory with shared bedrooms and bathrooms, a classroom, a student study space, a spacious common area, an open-air dining room and kitchen with student access, an in-ground swimming pool, a garden, and a yard.
For site visits and fieldwork in other regions in the country, we will stay in hotels or guesthouses. Accommodation while traveling will be basic, so please be prepared to be flexible.
Tuition
Full program fee is USD $6,995. The tuition fee includes educational and fieldwork activities, full-board and accommodation (dorm + 3 meals per day), tools, materials, project e-handbook, reading materials, issue of Certificate of Attendance, excursions/site visits/entrance fees and administrative costs. Fee does not include airfare or health/travel insurance.
Once accepted to the program, a deposit of $3,500 is required to secure your place on the program. Deposit is due April 1, 2017. The final payment is due by April 15, 2017. If payments are not made by the specified deadlines, your place will be given to another student. There is no application fee. Once accepted, students will receive the link to make payments and secure a place.
Travel
Students are expected to arrive in Siem Reap on May 27, 2017 before 2pm local time. The Siem Reap International Airport (REP) is located 6km outside of Siem Reap city center. IHP will arrange for international students to be met at the airport upon arrival and taken to IHP’s facilities.
Student Safety
The safety of our participants is paramount. IHP has robust systems in place to ensure the safety of our students, staff, and faculty. All participants must agree to adhere to these systems for the duration of the program. IHP conducts regular risk assessments of our programs and the regions in which we operate. We monitor and adhere to international guidelines as specified by:
- CDC Traveler’s Health: Country-by-Country
- S. State Department
- WHO International Travel and Health
To the best of our ability, IHP works to ensure the health and safety of all participants but it is impossible to eliminate all risk. As such, IHP is insured by the American International Group, Inc. (AIG). AIG provides for emergency medical evacuation, emergency security evacuation, and other emergency requirements. This covers participants for the duration of the program only and does not include health, medical, dental, or travel insurance.
All students are required to provide proof of health and travel insurance prior to arrival. They will not be allowed to participate on the program without this. Students are also required to undergo a medical approval process to ensure their ability to participate in the program. Cambodia is an extremely hot and humid country. Students will be spending significant amounts of time outdoors in the field, without air conditioning, in physically active situations. To ensure the safety of all of our participants it is absolutely necessary to confirm the physical and mental health of each student.
