Summer School - Empirical Implication of Theoretical Models, 24 June - 8 July 2017, Collegio Carlo Alberto, Italy

Publish Date: Feb 16, 2017

Deadline: Apr 30, 2017

About the summer school

(Mixed) Methods for the study of conflict and cooperation are receiving increasing scholarly attention in the social sciences promising learning from both qualitative and quantitative tools of analysis. They allow researchers to draw inferences from combinations of correlational analysis and process tracing (Humphreys and Jacobs 2015). However, applying mixed methods may have important implications for research design, for example, the varieties of mixing and the selection of cases and contexts.

This year's summer institute offers scholarly insights into the most recent developments on (mixed) methods approaches, including statistics, theories, and applications taught by leading scholars in four modules (plus a refresher course) from 24th June until 8th July 2017 at the Collegio Carlo Alberto in Turin. EITM Europe 2017 is directed by Thomas König (University of Mannheim) in collaboration with Fabio Franchino(University of Milan).

The first module on statistics from 26th until 28th (and the refresher 24th until 25th) will be taught by James Lo (University of Southern California), the theoretical module from June 29th until July 1st by Thomas Bräuninger (University of Mannheim), the module on mixed methods from July 3rd until July 5th by Macartan Humphreys (Columbia University), and the module on mixed methods for the study of international cooperation from July 6th until July 8th by Patrick Bayer (University of Glasgow).

Tuition

The tuition for the whole summer institute from 24th of June until 8th of July is 1000 €.  If participants want to join only a shorter period, the tuition is 300 € per module. To apply for the EITM Europe summer school, please use the online application form of the Essex Summer School.

This edition of the summer institute is organized in collaboration with the Network for the Advancement of Social and Political Studies (NASP) with the financial support of the Foundation Compagnia di San Paolo and the Department of Social and Political Sciences of the University of Milan. NASP will offer sponsorships of 3000 € each for participants from European universities outside Italy and sponsorships of 4000 € each for participants from universities outside Europe. For these sponsorships, applicants must apply separately to the NASP Young Investigator Training Program in Political Studies which received financial support from ACRI and will be soon advertised. Please note that recipients of these sponsorships will be requested to take part in other NASP research activities which will be organized before and after the summer institute. For more information about the NASP Program and the application procedure, please visit the NASP website or contact eitmEU@nasp.eu.
