The Department of Political Science at the University of Gothenburg has an open climate which encourages involvement in broader societal debates. Research areas of specialization include elections, democracy, corruption, governance, globalization, environmental politics as well as European studies. The department houses research programs such as QoG institute, Varieties of Democracy (V-Dem), Governance and local development (GLD) and The Swedish Election Studies Program. The department offers education on all levels; undergraduate, graduate and postgraduate, carried out in both English and Swedish. We have a total of 1,400 students enrolled in our courses, and 140 people are employed at the Department. The Department is centrally located in the city of Gothenburg.

Why are some communities able to provide secure environments, good education, and adequate healthcare, and other factors that promote human development, while others fail to do so? GLD is now searching for a postdoctoral fellow whose position is funded by Vetenskapsrådet (The Swedish Research Council)

Specific subject description

Political science is a social science discipline concerned with the study of the state, nation, government, and politics and policies of government on a national and international perspective.

Job assignments

As post-doctoral fellow you are expected to conduct research with a focus on one or several of the main questions of the research program in collaboration with Professor Ellen Lust, as well as with other members of the GLD research team. The work may partly take place in the Middle East and/or Africa. As a post-doctoral fellow you will mainly conduct research but may be asked to teach in the department.

Eligibility

The qualifications for academic positions are given in Chapter 4, Section 3 - 4 of the Higher Education Ordinance.

The PostDoc is open to candidates who have received a PhD in political science or related field. Priority will be given to candidates who have completed their degree no more than three years before the application deadline. Those who graduated earlier may also be given consideration, if there are special reasons.

Assessment

Regulations for the evaluation of qualifications for academic positions are given in Chapter 4, Section 3 - 4 of the Higher Education Ordinance.

We are looking for someone with prior research experience as closely connected as possible to the above described project research area. You need to have high competence on local governance, and, in particular, the Middle East, North Africa or Sub-Saharan Africa. Furthermore extensive knowledge of quantitative methodologies and analysis as well as skills in data processing, demonstrated knowledge of programs such as Stata and/or R is required. You should be able to independently produce scientific articles of high quality.

Apart from the above you should have a record of accomplishments in one or more of the following project research areas: development, service provision, non-state actors, survey methodology and related empirical methods. Experience implementing surveys or experiments in the developing world is strongly preferred. Having participated in larger-scale research- and other projects is also preferred. Excellence in English orally and written is expected, competence in Arabic and/or French is a merit.

To be successful in this position you must have an eye for details, be good at organizing and be a problem solver. You must be able to work well with a large, fluid and diverse team. We expect you to have very high communication skills and collaboration skills. We will make an overall assessment and the applicant considered to be best qualified to carry out and develop the duties described above will be appointed to the position.
