About the conference

We are pleased to announce the the forthcoming conference entitled Philosophy of borders: nations, states and immigration.

Confirmed keynote speaker: David Miller (University of Oxford)

The issues of citizenship, immigration, global justice and the rights and duties of states in relation to citizens and non-citizens are not only the subject of recent public discourse but are permanent topics in normative political philosophy. The conference aims to discuss some of the following issues:

  • the obligations of states to people who are non-citizens;
  • the normative dilemmas of allocating citizenship rights;
  • the normative legitimacy of bounded nations and states;
    ethics of immigration.

The conference is jointly organized by the Institute of Philosophy of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences and the Nationalism Studies Program at the Central European University and will take place in Budapest on February 3-4, 2017.

Call for Papers

The conference organizers invite scholars and researchers to submit their proposals discussing these normative issues from a philosophical, historical or interdisciplinary perspective. Submissions from advanced doctoral students are also welcome.

Possible topics include, but are not limited to:

  • theories of citizenship;
  • theories of nationhood and national sovereignty;
  • immigration;
  • rights and duties of states towards citizens and towards immigrants/refugees;
  • theories of borders;
  • theories of global justice.

The conference is jointly organized by the Institute of Philosophy of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences and the Nationalism Studies Program at the Central European University and will take place in Budapest on February 3-4, 2017.

Submission

To submit, please send the title of your proposed paper with a brief (250 words) abstract to philosophyofborders@gmail.com together with your name, affiliation and a short CV with a list of publications. The deadline to submit abstracts is October 31, 2016.

The registration fee for the conference is 20 €. A limited number of travel and accommodation grants are available for PhD students.
