PhD candidate 'Sexual Citizenship in the Dutch Caribbean'

Faculty of Humanities – Amsterdam School for Cultural Analysis

Research at the Faculty of Humanities is carried out by six research schools under the aegis of the Amsterdam Institute for Humanities Research. The Amsterdam School for Cultural Analysis, one of six research schools of the Faculty of Humanities, has a vacant PhD position as part of the NWO Project 'Cultural Practices of Citizenship under Conditions of Fragmented Sovereignty: Gendered and Sexual Citizenship in Curacao and Bonaire' (NWO Caribbean Research 2017-2022).

Project and job description

The project 'Cultural Practices of Citizenship under Conditions of Fragmented Sovereignty: Gendered and Sexual Citizenship in Curacao and Bonaire' in partnership with the University of Curacao asks how citizenship in the islands is practiced and culturally articulated by subjects facing multiple forms of systemic inequalities. It consists of two multi-disciplinary doctoral projects on cultural citizenship, one of which will be based at the University of Amsterdam.

The doctoral project 'Sexual Citizenship in the Dutch Caribbean' will inquire into cultural articulations of sexual minorities, including case studies in the areas of film, literature, theatre, ritual and cultural performance in the 20th and 21st centuries. The research will investigate their historical legacies, as well as study how these practices grapple with recent developments pertaining to sexual minority rights or tourism on the islands. The complex role of the European Netherlands forms another crucial axis of inquiry in the research. The project will add fresh insights to the study of citizenship in the Dutch Caribbean since the constitutional reforms of 2010, investigating the role of cultural practices of sexual minorities in forging the islands’ sovereignty.

Starting in May 2017, the recruited doctoral candidate shall be appointed with an employment contract of four years in total, with an evaluation after 12 months. The researcher will additionally benefit from travel grants, and will be required to take active part in a structured, international program of workshops, summer schools, and conferences. The researcher will further be expected to contribute to the curricular development of an undergraduate programme in Cultural Studies at the University of Curacao. The study should strengthen the knowledge base of civil society organisations on both islands advocating justice for women and sexual minorities.

Tasks of the PhD candidate will include:

  • completion and defense of a PhD thesis within the period of appointment;
  • regular presentations of intermediate research results at workshops and conferences;
  • participation in the training program of the UvA Graduate School of Humanities as well as stipulated workshops in the Caribbean.

Requirements

The successful applicant must have:

  • a relevant Master’s degree in the Humanities or Social Sciences;
  • a strong academic record with suitable work experience;
  • proven affinity with and knowledge of the Dutch Caribbean; previous work/study experience as well as connections to civil society organizations in the region is an asset;
  • excellent written and spoken command of Dutch, English and Papiamentu; a working knowledge of Spanish is desirable;
  • willingness and ability to travel and conduct fieldwork in the Caribbean;
  • familiarity with audio-visual tools in cultural research;
  • affinity with working in an interdisciplinary and international environment;

The project is committed to increasing diversity in the field. It welcomes applications from women, LGBT researchers, members of minority groups, and individuals with disabilities.
