Paul Mellon Centre for Studies in British Art Mid-Career Fellowships

Three Mid-Career Fellowships are offered annually for research in the field of British art and architectural history.

The Paul Mellon Centre for Studies in British Art offers a variety of Fellowships (for individuals) and Grants (for institutions and individuals) twice a year in a strictly timetabled schedule.  The programme supports scholarship, academic research and the dissemination of knowledge in the field of British art and architectural history from the medieval period to the present, although all supported topics must have an historical perspective.

We do not offer fellowships and grants in the fields of archaeology, the current practice of architecture or the performing arts. We have no discretionary funds outside our stated programme.

Mid-Career Fellowships are for the academic year 2017/2018 and may be taken between September 2017 and September 2018.  Fellowships cannot be deferred to later academic years nor can they run concurrently with a Fellowship awarded by another institution.

Scope of Mid-Career Fellowships

Three Mid-Career Fellowships will be awarded annually. These fellowships offer a four-month period of research to applicants who have already produced a major publication and are working on a subsequent research, publishing or curatorial project. The four-month period may be used to undertake research for an article, book, exhibition or catalogue. Applicants will be expected to provide details of the proposed outcomes of their research in their application.

Eligibility

Mid-Career Fellowships are designated primarily for academics and scholars at universities, museums, galleries or other institutions who are established in their careers and who were awarded their doctorates over six years previously. Applications are also welcome from independent and freelance scholars, and from individuals who do not hold a doctorate, but all applicants must have an established scholarly profile.

Mid-Career Fellowships may not be taken for less than the four-month period offered and they must be taken on a full-time basis. Applications for shorter periods will not be accepted.

Please note it is not permitted to submit a Research Support Grant application at the same time as a Mid-Career Fellowship application.

Funding

Three Mid-Career Fellowships of £12,000 each will be awarded.

Fellowship funds are offered either to the Fellow’s university or institution to cover replacement teaching or staff costs or as a grant to an independent or freelance scholar. An award paid to a university or an institution to cover teaching, curatorial or staff replacement costs must be used for that purpose only. The Centre does not pay full economic costs.

If an independent Fellow accepts full-time employment during the period of the Mid-Career Fellowship, the Centre will request an appropriate reimbursement of the award.
