Conflict & Political Violence

Course Description
The goal of this course is to review the most recent developments in the field of conflict and political violence. In exploring the intersection of large-scale collective action and political violence, we will draw from several fields of research and methodological approaches and we will examine a broad cross-section of topics, including the causes and dynamics of civil war, ethnic conflict, mass violence, genocide, riots, and terrorism; the logic of rebel group formation, cohesion, and performance, and the dynamics of post-conflict violence, peacekeeping, and peace-building. Our geographic focus will be broad, reflective of the faculty’s diverse expertise. An integral part of the course is a workshop where students can present their ongoing research and receive feedback from faculty and peers.
The faculty includes:
- Richard English, Pro-Vice-Chancellor of Queen’s University Belfast, where he is also Professor of Politics and Distinguished Professorial Fellow in the George J. Mitchell Institute for Global Peace, Security and Justice.
- Stathis Kalyvas, Arnold Wolfers Professor of political science, Yale University; Director of Yale’s Program on Order, Conflict, and Violence; author of The Logic of Violence in Civil War.

- Emma Sky, Senior Fellow, Jackson Institute for Global Affairs & Director, Maurice R. Greenberg World Fellows Program, Yale University.
How to apply
Applicants should be (post-) graduate students working towards Masters or Ph.D. degrees, but we usually admit some advanced undergraduates, as well as researchers and practitioners. All applicants should be fluent in English.

The deadline is May 3, 2017 and decisions will be mailed out by May 10, 2017. Early applications, especially for those seeking financial aid, are strongly encouraged. Please also note that early applications submitted by March 3, 2017, will receive a 50€ discount on the registration fee.
Admitted foreign students will be provided with all necessary documentation in support of a visa application, if this is needed.

Fees and Scholarships
There is a 150€ non-refundable registration fee to be paid in advance of the Academy to secure a place, in accordance with the instructions provided in the letter of admission. Those wishing to attend two cycles (one from Group I and one from Group II) do not have to pay the registration fee twice.
Early applications submitted by March 3, 2017, will receive a 50€ discount on the registration fee.

These tuition and board charges are IN ADDITION to the registration fee and cover:
- shared accommodation in a double occupancy room with breakfast,
- electronic access to all the reading material,
- excursions, cultural, social and extra curricular activities, and
- transportation from “Athens International Airport” to Nafplio and back.
A limited number of single rooms is available and can be provided at an additional charge of 50€ per night.
OSA Scholarships
For qualified applicants who can only attend one short cycle (half the program of the Academy) some financial aid of 150€ might be also provided on a merit and need basis.
Moreover, the Olympia Summer Academy offers a number of scholarships of 500€ each. These scholarships are open to all applicants and will be awarded on a merit and need basis.
Eligibility:
• Eligible to apply for an OSA scholarship are those who stay for the whole duration of the summer program, i.e. either students who attend Cycle A or those who attend two of the shorter Cycles (one from Group I and one of Group II).
• The OSA will automatically award its scholarship to all PhD candidates, who stay for the whole duration of the summer program and are members of the European International Studies Association
We encourage all students to search also for outside funding to cover their fees and/or travel expenses, by exploring funding opportunities available through their home universities and local non-governmental organizations.
All participants are expected to pay for their own travel to and from Athens.
