This programmes trains young researchers to conduct interdisciplinary research, employing up-to-date methodologies to study the interaction of issues of politics, economics, sociology, culture, ethnicity, religions, and linguistics with regards to Asian countries and peoples. The programme enables students to hone their knowledge and skills, preparing them for international careers in academia, diplomacy, or with non-governmental and governmental corporations. The programme has a partnership with City University of Hong Kong.

What are the benefits of the programme?

This MA Programme has the distinction of being the sole Programme on Asian Studies in Russia, taught in English language. It is also unique in using written sources in the languages of Asian regions as the fundamental teaching and research material. This is the only MA Programme focused on Contemporary Asian Studies. Students from different countries participate in this Programme, creating the benefit of global intellectual interaction.

Why should I study Asia, after all?

Asia ranks number 1among regions of the world ordered by population. The current population of Asia is about 4,443,039,236 as of 2016, based on the latest United Nations estimates.
The world’s fastest-growing economies being experienced across much of Asia and Africa. The Economy of Asia comprises more than 4.4 billion people (60% of the world population).

If you want to study Asia and to know, “how Asia works”,
We will teach you to analyses the roles of the state in market economy, to examine different forms of government intervention into economic life, to understand socioeconomic transformation in East Asia. The course “State & Economy in East Asia” investigates the theoretical as well as practical aspects of the roles of the State as an agent of economic development in East Asian countries.

If you want to study Asia and to know how to do business in Asia,
The course “Business and Entrepreneurship in Asia” is for you. It designed to introduce the fundamentals of economics and business culture, investing, management, entrepreneurship and running business in China, South East Asia, Japan, Korea and Middle East and South and South East Asia including Brunei, Cambodia, Indonesia, Laos, Malaysia, Myanmar, Philippines, Singapore, Thailand, and Vietnam.

If you want to study Asia and if you are interested in new trends in International Relations,
The course "Theory in Asian and International Studies" aims at equipping students majoring in Asian studies with a comprehensive understanding of classical and currently forming theoretical approaches as well as some of the main theoretical debates over issues that span the fields of International Relations, Comparative Politics and Asian studies.
The course “Russia’s Policies with Reference to East Asia» deals with Russian policy with regard to China, Korea and Japan.
The course “BRICS and the SCO States and Modern World Order” focuses on the main reasons for setting up political and trade Blocs in World and Regional framework giving prospects to shape general patterns of new Integration Process. Course examines BRICS and the SCO as a new pivotal global and regional system in the international context, focusing on security, economic ties and transnational global relations.

If you want to study Asia and to know, where the roots of ethnic and religious conflicts and wars are,
The course "Ethnic and Religious Conflicts in Asia" aims to deepen students’ professional knowledge in the area of ethnic and religious contradictions in Asia. It deals with the roots of ethnicity, ethnic and religious conflict and war in theoretical and critical perspective. It also develops students’ skills in researching and analyzing ethnic and confessional interactions in Asian regional perspective.

Diploma and academic transcripts

If you have not yet received your Bachelor’s diploma, please submit an official copy of your most recent academic transcript including all courses completed and grades received.

Letter of motivation (1000-2000 characters

In your letter of motivation, please discuss 1) why you are applying to this program, 2) why you have chosen to specialize in this field, and 3) your academic and professional interests connected to Asia. Please reference your previous educational, academic, or professional experiences that are connected with this focus (for example, research, trainings, civil service, teaching, entrepreneurship, etc.). Please state your career goals and explain how this programme will help you to achieve them.

Letters of motivation will be evaluated for content, structure, and narrative style.

Letter of Recommendation

Essay (10,000-12,000 characters)

All applicants must submit an original essay that addresses issues of development in Asia. You may touch upon different historical periods of development in China, Japan, and Korea, as well as issues in interactions between these three countries. Please choose from one of the prompts below: 

1. Problems of historical and cultural development in Asia (including historical-cultural tendencies in various historical periods, peculiarities of philosophic-religious systems, ethnic development, visual and applied arts, etc.) 

2. Social structures, social and socio-politic peculiarities in the development of Asian states, international Asian diasporas 

3. Governmental and political systems, systems of public administration (influence of separate regions (provinces, prefectures), local authorities, political parties and groups) 
4. Socio-economic and economic peculiarities in the development of Asian states in various historic periods (peculiarities of economic development, clan-group peculiarities of economy building, agricultural state and agricultural relations, etc.) 
5. Basic problems and threats for Asian states (access to water resources, corruption, religious-ethnic conflicts, ecological issues, stable economic development, territorial disputes, trade and economic conflicts, etc.)

6. International and interstate relations with the participation of Asian states (interaction between Russia and other countries and Asian states in various historical periods, interactions between East Asian and Southeast Asian states, peculiarities of development of large-scale international organizations, including BRICS, SCO, ASEAN, the system of international treaties with participation of East Asian states, etc.) 

7. Basic theories, methods, and schools of Asian Studies (historic-geographical researches, descriptions of the methods of leadings theories and schools of Asian Studies, concepts of the East, etc.)

Participation in research activities (optional)

Please describe your participation in research conferences, seminars, workshops, projects, centers, and labs.
If you have participated in a programme organized by HSE (Olympiad, Summer School, Winter School, etc.), please note the programme and the dates of participation.

Publications (optional)

Please list any publications that you have authored or edited.

Academic Honours and Awards (optional)

If you have received any academic honours or awards, please list them and the dates that you received them.

Demonstrated knowledge of Asian language skills (optional)

Please demonstrate that you are proficient in an Asian language by providing language certificates (HSK Chinese Proficiency Test, Japanese Proficiency Test (JPT), Korean Proficiency Test (KPT), etc.) or provide proof that you acquired language skills in your undergraduate studies.

Language study or academic scholarships in Asia (optional)

Scholarships and studies of a period of six months or longer will be evaluated. Please provide certificates, diplomas, and references to confirm your participation.

How to Apply

There are three application rounds. We encourage you to apply as soon as you feel that your application is ready. Please note that only applications received in the first and second rounds (by May 1, 2017) will be considered for scholarship funding.

1. Create a Profile

On HSE’s online application form , click “Get login and password”. You will be asked to enter your personal details (full name, date of birth, gender, email address, and mobile phone number) and what type of programme you are applying to.

Your login and password will then be sent to the email address that you have provided.

2. Log In

Once you have received the email containing your login and password, you can return to the online application form and log in.

3. Complete Application Form

After logging in, you will immediately see the application form. Please fill out the form. There are several attachments that you should be ready to upload:

a)Scan of the first page of your passport

b)Abstract of your undergraduate thesis

c)Scan of your diplomas and academic transcripts (if you have not yet received your Bachelor’s diploma, please include an official copy of your most recent academic transcript)

d)Letter of motivation (describing your reasons for applying in the context of your long-term career goals and background, 500 words)

e)Resume/CV (including information about your education, professional, and research experience, as well as language proficiency and other skills)

f)Exam results confirming language proficiency (optional)

Please upload all attachments as PDF files and include your last name in the filename (for example, Smith_Diploma.pdf)

Under “Field of study”, please select the two programmes that you wish to apply to. Your first choice and second choice programmes must be different. To select a programme, click on the box so that it turns green and the list collapses. Several programmes offer full tuition scholarships. If the “Tuition-free (quota) education” box is already checked, it means that if you apply to this programme you will automatically be considered for a full-tuition scholarship. If you would consider studying at HSE without the support of a full-tuition scholarship, please check the “Tuition-based” box. If the “Tuition-free (quota) education” box is not checked, this means that full-tuition scholarships are not available for this programme.

When you have fully completed the application form, click “Submit application” at the bottom of the form. Please note that this action is final and cannot be reversed, so make sure that you have correctly entered all of your information. After you have submitted your application, you will see the following message: “Congratulations! Your application has been successfully submitted and is currently pending review.”

4. Interview

After your application has been submitted, you may be contacted by a programme manager about setting up an interview. In rare cases, applicants may be exempt from interviews; if you do not receive an interview request, this does not mean that your application has been rejected. We know that it’s difficult to wait, but please do not write to us to inquire as to whether and when you will be receiving an interview invitation.

Scholarships

Tuition-free scholarships are awarded to highly qualified applicants to this programme. All applicants will automatically be considered for tuition-free scholarships.
