CALL FOR APPLICATIONS: MAKING ART 4.0, INTERNATIONAL TECHNOLOGY-AIDED ART CONTEST

Making Art 4.0, a contest aimed at promoting creativity integrated with and enhanced by technology, is open for applications. Launched by Scan And Make, the idea is to stimulate the creativity of the international art community and to push the usage of digital technology.

The 20 best submissions, as selected by Scan And Make personnel, will be entered into an exhibition, to be held in Liverpool’s Radio City Tower (United Kingdom) from 8-17 April 2017, and will be voted on by visitors to the exhibition. The work receiving the highest number of votes by visitors during the event will receive the first prize of £2,500.

Participating artists are requested to experiment with new possibilities of artistic creation through digital technology. The admitted applications will have to use one or more of the following techniques: Arduino and Raspberry Pi, CNC Milling, cutting plotters, robotics, 3D printing and additive manufacturing, and laser cutting and engraving.

Eligibility

The theme for the artworks is open, and participation is free and open to artists of any nationality. Participation can take place individually or in groups, and collectives will be treated as individuals. Each artist can submit one or more pieces of work.

To apply, please fill in the online form on the official website, and attach detailed documentation showing the creative process behind the work proposed: the instructions will have to make it possible to reproduce the piece and must include a bill of materials used (BOM), the 2D or 3D files or firmwares for the Arduino or Raspberry Pi boards, etc, and provide all steps to replicate it (with supporting pictures). Other proposals will also be considered, as long as they are fully reproducible and can be distributed digitally. The presence of a “recipe” that will allow Scan And Make’s users to reproduce the piece is mandatory. To download a recipe demo, please click here.

The submission deadline is 1 March 2017.

The 20 selected artists will be contacted by 15 March 2017.

Scan And Make aims to promote the use of computer-controlled technologies to a wider audience, enabling them to emerge from the techy bubble where they are now trapped. Its mission is to create a new front in the art market, by applying the same revolution that happened to the distribution of music and books to the art world. Not only will this create a new source of income for artists, but also for the users of the website: individuals will be able to re-create artistic objects by downloading the files and producing their own pieces, which can then be sold locally, in accordance with the licence. This process does not replace the art market's dynamics, which are based on the uniqueness of the piece, but rather adds new scenarios and new markets in a sector that has been suffering over the last few decades.
