PhD student in Structural Engineering: SmartCem

The Structural Engineering research subject, at the Division of Structural and Fire Engineering at Luleå University of Technology seeks to employ a PhD student to work within a research project “SmartCem”. The research group currently consists of approximately 25 persons including senior researchers, PhD students, technician and professors.

SUBJECT DESCRIPTION

Structural Engineering includes design, construction, condition assessment, maintenance, repair and strengthening of structures with focus on concrete, its properties and interaction with other materials.

PROJECT DESCRITPTION

There is a need for a new generation of efficient and reliable method for monitoring of concrete structures. Present solutions are mostly based on metallic sensors somehow connected with concrete surface, which result in their short lifetime and questionable reliability. These aspects are especially significant for concrete structures exposed to harsh environmental conditions; e.g. bridges or marine structures. The ideal solution is to develop a conductive concrete with self-monitoring capability. The project aims to develop a novel modified cementitious binder which after solidifying will have high electrical conductivity and strong piezoresistive properties. These properties will enable the transformation of stresses and strains into electrical response which will be used for monitoring. The concept will combine the latest developments in nanotechnology, physics, cement chemistry and engineering.

DUTIES

As a PhD student you will be trained in scientific thinking and writing. The work as a PhD student is problem focused. You will develop skills in identifying, define, formulate and solve problems of both practical as well as theoretical nature. You will also develop your skills to work with complex theoretical and analytical questions and to integrate these in to current practices. The PhD studies are 4 year, fulltime. Administration and/or lecturing 20% may be added.

QUALIFICATIONS

A suitable background for the position is a master in civil engineering, chemistry, material science or equivalent. Experience in concrete technology, experimental techniques including scanning electron microscopy (SEM), XRD, TG, previous experience with sensors for concrete will be an asset. It is required that the applicant speaks, reads and writes English relatively unhindered.
