About
Bequeathed to the Fondation des États-Unis in the early 1930s, the Harriet Hale Woolley Scholarship is awarded annually to a select number of exceptional American artists and musicians who plan to pursue their studies in Paris. A scholarship is also available to one French, Swiss or American medical post-graduate specializing in psychiatry with an internship in a Parisian hospital.
Eligibility Criteria
Artists and Musicians
The scholarship is awarded to a maximum of four American post-graduate students in visual fine arts (painting, graphic design, print-making, sculpture, photography) and music (composition, instrumental or vocal performance). The scholarship is not intended for research in art history or musicology, nor for dance or theater.
In order to apply for the scholarship, candidates must:
- possess American citizenship
- be between 21 and 29 years of age
- have graduated with high academic standing from an American college, university or professional school. Preference is given to mature students who have already done some graduate study.
- show evidence of high-level artistic or musical accomplishment
- propose a unique and detailed artistic project related to their field of study which requires a one-year residency in Paris. This project should include enrolment in a recognized French art or music school. It is strongly suggested that the candidate establishes contact with a teacher or institution prior to arriving in France.
- have good moral character, personality and adaptability. They must also be in good physical health and emotional stability.
- submit a complete and on-time application dossier. Incomplete or late applications will not be accepted.
Post-graduates in Psychiatry
The scholarship is awarded to one French, Swiss or American medical student specializing in psychiatry with an internship in a Parisian hospital.
In order to apply for the scholarship, candidates must:
- possess French, Swiss or American citizenship
- be between 21 and 29 years of age
- have graduated with high academic standing from a renowned international institution
- show evidence of an exceptional capacity for professional accomplishment in the field of psychiatry
- have good moral character, personality and adaptability. They must also be in good physical health and emotional stability.
- submit a complete and on-time application dossier. Incomplete or late applications will not be accepted.
Conditions upon acceptance
The successful candidates must apply for and obtain the appropriate visa and other relevant documentation prior to their arrival at the Fondation des États-Unis. They must ensure that their legal status remains in order throughout the entire stay. To find out more about visa requirements, please visit the US State Deprtment’s website.
The successful candidates must show proof of valid health insurance for the upcoming academic year. Academic institutions often offer special student health insurance.
Conditions during residency
- The scholars must pay rent in a timely manner and abide by the House Rules of the Fondation des États-Unis.
- The scholars must use the reserved artist atelier or music room at the Fondation des États-Unis as their principle residence throughout the academic year.
- The scholars must maintain high academic and artistic standards by regularly attending classes, and by participating in the cultural program at the Fondation des États-Unis.
- The scholars in the field of the visual arts agree to donate an artwork to the Fondation des États-Unis, which has been created during the residency.
- At the end of the residency, the scholars must submit a brief summary of the academic year, commenting on their progress, achievements, and academic results.

Application Materials to Submit
Artists and Musicians
- The Harriet Hale Woolley Scholarship application form.
- A passport sized photo should be inserted into the application form and also sent in JPEG format.
- A detailed CV.
- A short yet detailed statement about your project including the French school and/or instructor you intend to work with.
- It is highly recommended that candidates include a letter of admission to study at a French institution, including for Visa purposes.
- A certificate of proficiency in French signed by a qualified teacher of French. Please note that if you are not reasonably fluent, you must show a serious commitment by acquiring basic proficiency before arriving in France. It is also strongly recommended to include a letter of intent to enroll in a French language upon arrival in France.
- Three letters of recommendation from professors familiar with the applicant’s general qualifications, artistic ability and accomplishment. The letters should be typed on letterhead paper, and should be emailed by the issuer.
- Copies of complete and original transcripts of all colleges or universities attended with embossed seal of the issuing institution. A high definition color scan will be accepted for the initial application process. Shortlisted candidates may be requested to send the original paper copies.
- Examples of the applicant’s work. For visual artists, a presentation of recent works may be sent electronically (the corresponding print-outs may be requested). For musicians, please submit at least 15 minutes of music showcasing a minimum of three contrasting styles is required (the corresponding audio CD may be requested).
- A simple medical certificate confirming the candidates good general health. Successful candidates will be required to show proof of paid-up accident and health insurance before arrival.
- Proof of American citizenship i.e. a clear high definition color scan of the applicant’s passport.
Post-graduates in Psychiatry

Please note that if you are not reasonably fluent, you must show a serious commitment by acquiring basic proficiency before arriving in France. It is also strongly recommended to include a letter of intent to enroll in a French language course upon arrival in France.
