Project Detail:

The School of the Arts, English and Drama offers an exciting interdisciplinary research environment and we welcome the submission of high-quality proposals that have the potential to make a substantive contribution to research within the School. We invite proposals that address one of the following research themes:

  • Literature and Culture of the fin de siècle (1890-1914)
  • Digital Archives and Cultural Heritage: digital art books; e-Book publishing and publishing history; or digital storytelling
  • Renaissance and Early Modern Literature and Culture (1550-1760); with an emphasis on digital humanities methods and resources in analyses of literary histories
  • Drawing||Phenomenology: Tracing the lived experience through drawing
  • Art Activism and Political Violence
  • Analysing Contexts for Contemporary Art
  • Storytelling as Professional Practice: the evolving job of the professional storyteller
  • Performance/Philosophy: explorations of the relationships between any areas of these two disciplines
  • Understanding Urban Visual Culture through Design Culture
  • Museum Culture and the Art Market: Private Collecting and Public Responsibility in the Contemporary Artworld
  • Gendered Lives: experience, representation, and/or theorisation, including queer, feminist, and/or trans lives
  • Art and Witness: Documentation or Encounter as Photographic, Visual or Literary Form. (Theory or Practice-based proposals welcome)
  • INTERSECTIONS: Craft + Technology research for practice-based textile design
  • Animation and Public Engagement (including animation archival practice; animation in the gallery; animation, health and well-being; animation and culture)
  • Service Design Innovation for Meaningful Experience(s)

As part of your application you will be required to submit a detailed research proposal (approximately 2,000 words). For practice-based applications please submit a portfolio of work in addition to the proposal. Please indicate which theme(s) your proposal aligns with.

Entry requirements:

Applicants should have at least a 2:1 Honours degree (or equivalent). A relevant Master’s degree and/or relevant work experience is essential.

Funding:

The studentships will be paid for a period of up to three years, starting in October 2017, and will cover tuition fees at the UK/EU rate, and provide a tax-free annual stipend of £14,296 (16/17 RCUK rate). The value of the stipend in years two and three will increase in line with RCUK recommended values. A condition of the studentships is that students live within a 15 mile radius of Loughborough University. International students may apply, but please note that the fees for international students will be deducted from the annual stipend.
