About the program
The German Historical Institute Washington (GHI) invites proposals for conferences and workshops for the 2018/2019 academic year to be organized in cooperation with the GHI. We are seeking proposals in the GHI’s core areas of research (German history, American history, transnational and global history, digital history, the history of knowledge). We also encourage proposals involving new topics of exploration and new approaches to historical research, e.g. in “Migration and Knowledge,” the research focus of our new branch office GHI WEST at UC Berkeley.
The GHI, an institute of the Max Weber Foundation, is committed to fostering international scholarly dialogue and supporting advanced historical research. Toward those ends, it offers doctoral and postdoctoral fellowships for archival research, runs transatlantic seminars for graduate students, and organizes upwards of twenty international conferences, symposia, and workshops every year. This call for conference proposals is aimed at expanding the GHI’s collaboration with scholars and institutions in North America and Europe. Eligibility
To be eligible to submit a conference or workshop proposal to the GHI, scholars must hold a PhD in history or related fields. Individual applicants must be affiliated with a university or research institution in the United States, Canada, or Germany; for group applications, at least one applicant must be affiliated with a U.S., Canadian, or German institution. Proposals may be submitted in either English or German; the conference language must be English. To ensure a broad and diverse pool of potential conference participants, the GHI will insist that a call for papers be issued.
The GHI does not cover the full amount of conference costs and strongly encourages applicants to secure at least provisional funding commitments from their home institutions and/or other sources. The GHI reserves the right to smaller sums than requested. It will be the responsibility of the applicants to secure third-party funding. Once a proposal has been approved, we look forward to finalizing the conference planning in collaboration with the applicant(s). Typically, one or more of the GHI’s research fellows will participate as co-organizers
The proposal must include:
- The completed application form, including a projected budget.
- A description of the proposed conference topic (1500 words maximum) that:
- sets the topic in historiographic context;
- explains how the conference is expected to contribute to research on the topic and how it will open new perspectives on the topic;
- lists the names and affiliations of potential participants (this will not take the place of a call for papers).
The deadline for proposals for the 2018/2019 academic year is June 15, 2017. Proposals may be in English or German: applicants are strongly encouraged to use the language in which they are most proficient. We can accept applications in electronic form only. After completing the online application form, please submit your proposal as a single PDF file along with the completed application form to conferences@ghi-dc.org.
All applicants will be notified by September 30, 2017 of the result of their application. A call for proposals for the 2019/2020 academic year will be announced in spring 2018.
