Brunel Santander Scholarship
Terms and conditions 2017/18
We are pleased to offer five scholarships funded by the Santander Universities scheme for the academic year 2017/18. Each scholarship will have a value of £5000 and is available for a period of one academic year only. The scholarship is available to international applicants on a postgraduate or PhD programmes starting in September 2017.
Applicants starting in January will not be considered for a scholarship.
Scholarship details
Value: £5000 fee waiver on year 1 tuition fee for 2017/18 entry.
How many: 5 Scholarships are available.
Application process: The applicant must submit an online scholarship application via the student portal eVision by 11.59 pm (GMT) on 31 May 2017. The application will include a 500 word essay describing why the applicant has applied to Brunel and why they would make a good ambassador for the course and University.
Eligibility criteria
To be considered for one of the Santander scholarships applicants must:
- Be in receipt of an offer to study on a full-time postgraduate taught or full-time postgraduate research programme of study starting in September 2017.
- Be a national from, and be residing in, one of the following Santander Universities network countries at the time of application: Argentina, Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Mexico, Peru, Puerto Rico, Uruguay, USA, Venezuela.
- Normally have achieved the international equivalent of a UK upper second class honours dehrtee (2:1) or higher.
- Must NOT have previously received a Brunel International Scholarship either as part of current or earlier studies.
- This scholarship programme is not available to current registered Brunel students on a full time or part time undergraduate or postgraduate programme. Students on the LBIC programmes and distance learning versions of courses, or the English@Brunel, Pre-sessional English and Intensive Foundation or Premasters courses through the IPLC (International Pathways and Language Centre).
- Must submit an online scholarship application via eVision by 11.59pm (GMT) on 31 May 2017. Late applications will not be considered.
- By accepting a scholarship you are agreeing to become a Student Ambassador for the University. As a Student Ambassador you would be expected to:
- Attend a welcome reception during the year.
- Take part in photoshoots and filming events organised by the International Recruitment or Marketing team (maximum of three).
- Write a profile of yourself (250 words) that should include some or all of the following points – Why you chose Brunel – Your life at the university – How your course at Brunel will contribute to your career.
- Become a student blogger. Create and develop a blog, which you will be expected to regularly contribute to during your time at Brunel (a minimum of 100 words a week). You will be given technical support to set up a blog and create graphics for your site, if needed. This blog will be featured on the international website, and sections may be used for other university publications. This route will suit anyone who is already a keen blogger. A maximum of three students may become student bloggers.
- Give feedback and advice on how to apply for a Brunel international scholarship for future applicants, as required.
- Meet guests from overseas universities or embassies.
- Other duties as and when stated include hosting tours of the campus and its facilities, providing administrative support at Open Days, participating in social media and other marketing activity.
Successful applicants will be contacted by the International Recruitment or Marketing team.
Allocation
- Candidates will be considered based on their academic merit and personal statement.
- Where more applicants meet the criteria than there are scholarships available, the International Scholarships Panel will consider the applicants overall application profile.
- Scholarship awards are made by the International Scholarships Panel and all decisions are final. The University will not accept any appeals in respect of the decisions made by the Panel.
- All applicants will be notified of the panel's decision by the middle of July.
Conditions of Payment
- Scholarship awardees will be responsible for paying the remainder of their tuition fees after the scholarship contribution is deducted from the total fees for the academic year 2017/18.
- All awards comprise of £5,000 tuition fee waiver for the academic year 2017/8. This fee waiver is a single contribution and will not be continued in subsequent years and is not applicable to any additional fees such as resubmissions or module re-sit fees. No cash alternatives will be offered.
- The scholarship does not replace the deposit of £3000. All scholarship awardees will need to pay the £3000 deposit for their course in order to receive an unconditional offer and a Confirmation of Acceptance of Studies (CAS).
- Scholarship awards will not be credited towards tuition fees until the applicant has fully registered at Brunel University London. This includes having qualifications and other documentation verified and checked and holding the correct visa to study.
- Scholarship awardees who have already paid the full course fees will receive a refund for the value of the award once they have met all conditions of their offer and registered as a student at Brunel University London.
- Scholarships are awarded for the academic year 2017/18 only and cannot be deferred to later entry months or years. Applicants who intend to defer their studies must re-apply for a scholarship in the year they will begin their studies.
- Payment will only be made providing that the student is enrolled at the University.
- Scholarship awardees who have already paid the full course fees will receive a refund once they have met all conditions of their offer and enrolled onto their main course in person.
- Successful applicants will not be eligible to apply for this scholarship programme in subsequent years (i.e. If you are successful in achieving a scholarship for an undergraduate course at Brunel in Year one, you will not be able to apply for the scholarship again in Year two, nor will you be able to apply for the scheme again if you choose to do a postgraduate course at the University).
- The scholarships cannot be combined with any other University bursary, discount or awards, with the exception of the 2% prompt payment discount and the International Academic Excellence scholarship. This will be deducted from the tuition fees remaining after the scholarship discount has been applied at enrolment.
Withdrawal of a scholarship
- The University reserves the right to withdraw a scholarship from anyone who is found to have misled the University about any aspect of their eligibility and to seek repayment of any monies already paid by appropriate means.
- The University reserves the right to withdraw a scholarship from anyone who fails to comply with the requirement to take part in promotional activities, as stated in the ‘promotional activities’ section of these Terms and Conditions.
- A student who withdraws from their chosen programme of study prior to completion of Term 1 will not normally be requested to repay scholarship payments made up to withdrawal; however, the University reserves the right to charge tuition fees for the period between the start of the course and the date of withdrawal. A student in receipt of a scholarship who withdraws from their programme will not normally be requested to repay the scholarship. Any tuition fee liability remaining at the point of withdrawal is therefore calculated in accordance with the Student Financial Policy
- A student electing to take a period of temporary withdrawal (abeyance) will only receive the scholarship once at the start of the course. If tuition fees remain due when returning from a period of temporary withdrawal then these would need to be paid upon return
- Fee waivers are applied at the start of the academic year as part/all of a scholarship entitlement and will not normally be amended once the fee waiver has been processed. Any tuition fee liability remaining after fee waivers are applied would therefore be calculated in accordance with Student Financial Policy. In the case of withdrawal or abeyance the tuition fee and the fee waiver are calculated in accordance with Student Financial Policy.
