The Bayreuth International Graduate School of African Studies (BIGSAS) is now in the second phase funded by the German Research Foundation as part of the Excellence Initiative since 2007.

In the focus of this unique structure of creative and innovative training are approximately 100 Junior Fellows from 27 African, American, Asian and European countries. The PhD students benefit from a clearly structured, academic and career-oriented training as well as a genuine expertise in the African studies which has increased continuously since the foundation of the University of Bayreuth. The international network with Partner Universities on the African continent creates even more so excellent conditions for the research of our Junior Fellows.

The Bayreuth International Graduate School of African Studies (BIGSAS), funded since 2007 by the German Research Foundation of the Excellence Initiative of the German Federal and State Governments, will admit a limited number of PhD sandwich students from the BIGSAS Partner Universities and all universities that have a Memorandum of Understanding with the University of Bayreuth to its doctoral programme.

Sandwich students spend one year of their studies in Bayreuth in the period after their admittance and 31 December 2018. The remaining two years of study are spend at the respective home institution. The stay in Bayreuth is connected with a scholarship of monthly EUR 1,200. Sandwich students are under the joint supervision of their supervisor at their home institution and a Senior Fellow of BIGSAS. They are awarded a joint or double degree after successful completion of the doctoral programme.

The Bayreuth International Graduate School of African Studies at Bayreuth University brings together outstanding young African and non-African scholars to work jointly in the field of African Studies. It offers a centre of creative and innovative PhD training based on a multi- and cross-disciplinary research environment. BIGSAS invites applications from candidates whose dissertation project fit into one of the Graduate School’s current Research Areas. Applicants must have a very good Master’s Degree in one of the disciplines represented at the Graduate School. Applications may be sent in German, English or French; the working language of BIGSAS is English.

Applications can only be taken into consideration if the following documents are provided (in English, French or German) and meet the requested specifications. Academic Presentation

  • Project proposal
    (including the aims of the dissertation, a detailed work and time schedule for the project, ten pages at a max. and an abstract of the proposal. Please include your name, page number and an explanation of the file on each page.)

  • Letter of Motivation
    (1 page, explaining why you apply for BIGSAS)

  • Soft copy of your written Master’s or equivalent thesis

  • Two letters of reference
    (Authors need to be from the applicant's academic background and mentioned with title and university/institute. Letters have to be signed personally by the authors.)

  • List of academic publications (if applicable)

  • Curriculum Vitae
    (showing your academic progress and qualification(s) in detail)

  • Secondary School Graduation Certificate / Higher Education Entrance Certificate

  • Bachelor's Degree or equivalent degree including transcript of records
    (e.g. Licence ou Maîtrise, a certified copy is requested)

  • Master's Degree or equivalent degree including transcript of records
    (e.g. DEA or DESS, a certified copy is requested)
