Students with no previous experience learn to understand Armenian culture and to speak Armenian at the Novice High or Intermediate Low level, preparing them to participate in elementary activities in CLI's Summer in Yerevan program.

- Second-Year courses require completion of a placement test
LOCATION
Arizona State University is a large, metropolitan university. The main campus, housing 64,000 students, is located in Tempe, 15 minutes by light rail from Phoenix Sky Harbor Airport. Emblematic of the lively, eclectic atmosphere of Tempe is the city's main street, Mill Avenue. Anchored on one end by gleaming office towers and on the other by the university, with a mix of eccentric and upscale establishments, Mill Avenue caters to both international students and international businesses.
Housing
CLI offers language-segregated on-campus housing in the at one of the ASU dormitories (TBD).
ASU typically offers double-occupancy rooms for $16.50/day, with bathrooms shared between two double-occpuancy rooms.
ASU also typically offers single-occupancy rooms for $32/day. Singles are identical to doubles, but with only one occupant. They share a pass-through bathroom and have two sets of furniture.
Bed linens are available for an additional one-time $20 charge.
Typical amenities include: laundry facilities, kitchen facilities, vending machines, air conditioning basic cable.
Kitchens are usually shared among residents of the hall and the CLI language clubs, so access may be limited at times.
Microfridge/microwave units are available for rent
DINING
CLI participants may eat on campus or may make their own meal arrangements. ASU offers pay-as-you-go summer dining in Manzanita Hall or the food court in the student union. (See Memorial Union Businesses Map for details on food-court options.)
OFF-CAMPUS OPTIONS
CLI students are not required to live in the ASU dorm or to eat on campus. Private summer sublets are available near campus. Price and quality vary. CLI does not assist with off campus housing arrangements.

TITLE VIII FUNDING FOR GRADUATE STUDENTS Department of State Seal
The Department of State's Title VIII program funds graduate students with U.S. citizenship to study less commonly taught languages.
Title VIII provides fellowships of up to $2,500 for the study of 1st-Year Armenian in CLI-Arizona.

MELIKIAN CENTER FUNDING FOR ALL OTHER PARTICIPANTS
Supported by the Melikian Center's endowment and by private donations, the Melikian Center Awards Program provides scholarships of up to $900 for superior applicants to study Armenian in CLI-Arizona.
ASU students, non-ASU students, teachers, and other non-students are eligible to apply for this funding.

Program Fee:
CLI charges a flat fee of $900 for its Tempe-based courses, regardless of number of credits taken.
This fee covers academics only. It does not cover room, board, travel, study abroad, books, or insurance.

2. 1st-Year Armenian in Yerevan
Overview
Students of CLI Summer Armenian in Yerevan immerse themselves in Armenian culture while strengthening their mastery of the language through specially designed courses and extramural activities. This small, flexible program is customized to meet the needs of each participant.

CULTURAL PROGRAMS
Since the program is small, CLI customizes it to individual students. Excursion and activities schedules are set up each year in consultation with participants, but typically include:
- Armenian film showings
- The Pharajanov Art Museum
- Tsistrnakaberd (Geonocide Museum)
- Church service at Zvartots
- The Matenadaran literature museum
- Virap monestary
- The Erebouni Museum
- Lake Sevan
- Mashtots Avenue
- Cognac factory

- Martiros Saryan Museum

LOCATION
Located in the heart of the Caucasus Mountains, with stunning views of Mount Ararat, Yerevan is the capital and largest city of the Republic of Armenia. A compact city with a population of roughly one million, Yerevan offers a wide variety of educational and cultural opportunities in a friendly and safe environment. One of the oldest cities of the world, Yerevan is dotted with ancient churches, monuments, and archeological sites.
ABOUT THE PROGRAM
CLI's program in Yerevan is developed in the ASU Melikian Center for Russian, Eurasian, and East European Studies. It is directed by Dr. Siranush Khandanyan of Yerevan State University.
HOUSING
CLI Yerevan participants stay in a private apartment in central Yerevan. They may cook for themselves or dine in any of the downtown restaurants. In most summers, students share a single, large apartment. One or more local peers live in and share the apartment with CLI students when possible.

- THE BENJAMIN A. GILMAN INTERNATIONAL SCHOLARSHIP
The State Department's Gilman Scholarship provides awards of up to $5000 for students in financial need to study abroad, including in CLI overseas programs. Gilman applications require certification of the program by your institution's study-abroad office. If you apply for Gilman support, please contact cli@asu.edu for assistance in getting the required information to your institution.
Gilman summer study applications are accepted from August to October and January to March. Please apply for the early competition, if possible, since applicants to the later competition will not learn their award status until after the deadline to commit to CLI study. Please contact cli@asu.edu for details on timing your Gilman application.
