American Council on Germany Anna-Maria and Stephen M. Kellen Fellowships 2017, USA

Publish Date: Feb 08, 2017

Deadline: Jul 31, 2017

KELLEN FELLOWSHIPS

The Anna-Maria and Stephen M. Kellen Fellowships provide an opportunity for exceptional German print, broadcast, and new media journalists who live and work in Berlin to travel to the United States to conduct interviews with policymakers, opinion leaders, and experts while doing in-depth reporting.

Named in honor of Anna-Maria and Stephen M. Kellen, a Berlin native who was an ACG Board member and Co-Chairman of the New York investment firm Arnhold and S. Bleichroeder Holdings, the fellowships give up-and-coming journalists the opportunity to examine key issues in the German-American partnership.

Applicants should present a project proposal of three to five pages detailing their plans, including the background and scope of the research, the general sources and institutions with which they would like to consult, and the relevance for the transatlantic relationship. A research itinerary for the duration of the fellowship will be further developed once selected.

Fellows receive a $5,000 stipend, which covers transatlantic airfare and domestic travel, as well as room and board, for a minimum of 21 days. Fellows work closely with the Program Director to organize a detailed itinerary before the stipend is released. Travel must take place within one calendar year of selection.

After completion of the fellowship, fellows are required to submit an analytical report on their research findings. This report must be suitable for publishing by the American Council on Germany. Fellows are also asked to share their findings with a wider audience through presentations and discussions at ACG Warburg Chapters and/or their local communities, as well as on social media.

Past fellows have investigated issues such as the gentrification of U.S. cities, immigration trends, the American education system, the Transatlantic Trade and Investment Partnership (TTIP), and comparative perspectives on a wide range of other important public-policy issues.

Applicants must be mid-career journalists who hold German citizenship and live and work in Berlin. Working knowledge of the English language is a prerequisite. Journalists who are employed by a media organization are encouraged to apply. Freelance journalists are asked to demonstrate where resulting articles and/or related pieces could be published.

To apply, please submit the following:

  • An application form;
  • A cover letter outlining your personal and professional objectives for the fellowship;
  • A three- to five-page project proposal as described above;
  • A current resume;
  • Two letters of recommendation.
