About

The Japan Media Arts Festival is a comprehensive festival of Media Arts (Japanese: Media Geijutsu) that honors outstanding works from a diverse range of media - from animation and comics to media art and games. The festival gives awards in each of its four divisions: Art, Entertainment, Animation, and Manga. It also provides a platform for appreciation of the Award-winning and other notable works. Since its inception in 1997, the festival has recognized significant works of high artistry and creativity, and in addition to a yearly Exhibition of Award-winning Works has held other events, such as symposiums, screenings, and showcases. Last year, the 19th Festival received 4,417 entries from 87 countries and regions around the world, demonstrating is continuing evolution as an established annual international festival. Award-winning Works are exhibited both within Japan and abroad through various projects and events organized by The Agency of Cultural Affairs, Government of Japan which aims to develop and promote the creation of Media Arts by focusing primarily on the new generation of artists.

This year, Japan Media Arts Festival marks its 20th anniversary since its inception in 1997 and two projects as “The 20th Japan Media Arts Festival” and “Japan Media Arts Festival 20th Anniversary Exhibition” will be held.
From this year, the schedule from call for entries through judging and selection until announcement of Award-winning Works is significantly changed.
After strict jury screening, the Grand Prize, the Excellence Awards, the New Face Awards and Jury Selections in the four divisions of Art, Entertainment, Animation and Manga as well as the winners of Special Achievement Awards will be selected and announced in mid-March 2017. (The Exhibition of Award-winning Works will be held around Summer to Autumn 2017.)

Divisions

The Four Divisions (Art, Entertainment, Animation, Manga)
※ In all divisions professional, amateur, independent and commercial works are eligible for submission.

Art Division
Interactive art, media installations, video works, video installations, graphic art (digital illustrations, digital photographs, computer graphics, etc.), internet art, media performances, etc.

Entertainment Division
Games (video games, online games, etc.), video / sound works (music videos, independent and advertising videos, etc.), multimedia productions (including special effects videos, performances, projections), gadgets, electronic devices, websites (including web promotions, open source projects), application software, etc.

Animation Division
Animated feature films, animated short films, animated series, etc.

Manga Division
Comics published in book form, comics published in a magazine (including works still being serialized), comics published online (for computer or mobile devices), self-published comics, etc.

Eligibility

Works must be completed or released between:
Thursday, September 10, 2015 and Friday, September 9, 2016.
* Works completed, changed, renewed, presented or released during the above period are eligible for entry.
* While an unlimited number of entries may be made, the same work may not be entered in multiple divisions.

The entrant must hold the copyright of the submitted work. If the work is submitted by a representative, permission from the copyright holder must be obtained.
*Each entrant must read, understand and accept the Rules and Regulations before submission.
*By submitting their work, the entrant is deemed to have accepted all Entry Rules and Regulations as stated.

Awards

For each division, a Grand Prize, Excellence Awards, and New Face Awards will be awarded on the basis of artistic quality and creativity. In addition, Special Achievement Awards will be awarded on the recommendation of the Jury to individuals or groups who have made a special contribution to Media Arts in any of the four divisions.

Grand Prize: Certificate*, trophy, 600,000 Japanese Yen
Excellence Award: Certificate*, trophy, 300,000 Japanese Yen
New Face Award: Certificate*, trophy, 200,000 Japanese Yen
Special Achievement Award: Certificate*, trophy
Other outstanding entries will be chosen by the Jury as Jury Selections.

Rules and Regulations - Copyright and Treatment of Entered Works

The entrant must hold the copyright of the submitted work. If the work is entered by a representative, permission from the copyright holder is required.

Permission must be obtained from the copyright holder for the use of any art, film, photographs, video images, programs music or any other content used in the submitted work. The entrant takes sole responsibility for resolving any third party claims of infringement of rights and/or claim for damages. The organizer shall not be held accountable in the event of any dispute.

Depending on the form or type of the work, it may be necessary to change the division in which the work has been entered.

All expenses related to submission of works to the competition (for example delivery cost to the Secretariat) are borne by the entrant.

Submitted works and reference materials will be returned only in exceptional circumstances.

In the case of any accidental damage to or loss of submitted work, the organizer shall not be held responsible.

Depending on the screening process, additional materials may be required.

The Secretariat shall provide no information about the screening process before or after the official announcement.

The copyright of submitted works shall remain with the entrant.

Submitted works and reference materials may be duplicated by the Secretariat. The use of such duplicated materials is limited to the purpose of jury screening.

The organizer may screen, publicly transmit (broadcast), duplicate, exhibit translate, and/or publicize any works on its website, without compensation. This use purposes of announcing the results of the Award-winning Works and Jury Selections, exhibiting the Award-winning Works and Jury Selections and publicizing the 20th Japan Media Arts Festival.

Works that are exhibited or introduced in the Exhibition of Award-winning Works of the 19th Japan Media Arts Festival will be documented in video and photographs. This documentation may be used for PR and related projects of the 20th Japan Media Arts Festival.

Regarding Personal Information

 
The Japan Media Arts Festival Executive Committee shall make every reasonable effort to prevent disclosure, appropriation, and/or distortion of personal information by adhering to the following guidelines.
1.Use of Personal Information
Personal information submitted by an entrant shall be used only for
(1) Announcement of screening results
(2) Contact for enquiry about submitted works
(3) Contact about Related Events of Japan Media Arts Festival
(4) Statistical analysis for improvement of the Japan Media Arts Festival
(5) Providing information about the Japan Media Arts Festival and related events, and when seeking entries to the Japan Media Arts Festival. (If such disclosure is unacceptable to the applicant, it will be withheld upon request.)
(6) Public announcement of award winners to the media and on the website (the title of the work, winner’s name and affiliation, etc.). We will directly contact each winner to confirm this before making public announcement.)

If personal information is required for use beyond the above reasons, the Secretariat will contact the entrant for permission prior to use.
2.Disclosure to a Third Party
Appropriate efforts shall be made to administer and protect an entrant’s personal information. This personal information shall not be disclosed to any third party without prior consent. In addition, such information shall only be disclosed to a third party when absolutely necessary for operation and management by the Japan Media Arts Festival Secretariat. However, information may be disclosed when consent from the person concerned cannot be obtained, if such disclosure is necessary to protect human life or property, or is required by law.
3.Entrants’ Obligation
All entrants must read, understand, and accept the “Entry Rules and Regulations” before submitting work. By submitting their work, the entrant is deemed to have accepted all Entry Rules and Regulations as stated.

Entry Guidelines

For the 20th Festival in 2016, entries will be accepted from across the globe. Entries are sought in various disciplines of the Media Arts including interactive art, video, websites, games, animation and comics, from professional, amateur, independent and commercial sources.

How to Enter

1. Register an account

Go to the entry website.
a) Enter your email address and password and proceed to the account registration page.
b) Complete the Account Registration form. Please provide all information requested.
c) A confirmation email will be sent to the email address provided on the form. Complete account registration by accessing the entrant page form the link in the email you receive.

2. Enter information about the Artist(s) and Work(s):
Artist information: Artist’s name, birthday, nationality, country of residence, etc.
Work information: Title, category, date of release or completion, brief summary, etc.

3. Submission of work and/or reference materials for screening
a) Please submit work and/or reference materials for screening using any of the methods A, B or C specified below.
※When submitting videos, please choose submission method depending on file size, etc. Note that lower file size may result in reduced video quality. Please ensure quality accurately represents the work.
A) Upload data to a web server of your choice and register a URL
Please upload the data to a web server of your choice (e.g. your own website, a video sharing site, a picture sharing site etc.) and register the URL.
For the screening process, please make sure that the files are available to view or download until February, 2017.
1) Use of video sharing sites or picture sharing sites

Examples of sharing sites: Vimeo / You Tube / pixiv / Flickr / deviantART
When using video or picture sharing sites, you must adhere to the site’s terms, guidelines and restrictions.

2) Use of a web server of your choice other than those listed under 1)
Please use one of the data formats specified as follows:

Documents: doc / pdf
As a rule, file types other than those listed above will not be accepted.

B) Upload the data of work and/or reference materials for screening to the web server of the Japan Media Arts Festival.
The Application Server can be accessed from the Work Information page, upon creating your account.
Please note that the size restrictions vary according to the submitted file type.
If any password, procedure or other information is needed to view or download the data, be sure to provide details.

Photographic images: jpg / pdf / gif – maximum size 10MB
Documents: doc / pdf – maximum size 10MB

C)After all work-related information has been entered and confirmed, an entry confirmation will be created. Print out this confirmation and attach it to the media (two copies) in which the data of work and/or reference materials for screening or the printed material, and send them.

b) Upload an image of the work.
Image: One photographic image, PNG/JPG format, minimum 600 pixels on longer side, maximum size, maximum size 5MB.\

What to Submit

Materials and information to be submitted vary depending on the division and the screening category of the work. Refer to the table of screening categories below and submit the appropriate materials for your work. The submitted work will be reviewed based on both the registration information and submitted materials.

 

The Exhibition of Award-winning Works of 20th Japan Media Arts Festival will be held around Summer to Autumn 2017.

This exhibition presents the diverse forms of expression of the Award-winning Works as well as documentation of the winners of Special Achievement Awards. The Japan Media Arts Festival is the showcase that honors outstanding works selected after a rigorous judging process, as well as providing a platform to share the new cultural values.
These works, along with a program of concurrent events have gathered diverse artists and creators, exemplifying the “here and now” of Media Arts in the past. The Exhibition of Award-winning Works of 20th Japan Media Arts Festival will also offer precious opportunity to experience diverse forms of expression. Look forward to that.
